What is TAVR?
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that replaces a patient’s valve without removing the old, damaged valve. TAVR is for patients with aortic stenosis who may be at somewhat elevated risk for traditional surgical aortic valve replacement.Typically, patients who qualify for TAVR have severe aortic stenosis and may or may not qualify for open aortic valve replacement.
How does TAVR work?
TAVR is a procedure that’s performed by using specialized tools to deliver an artificial valve through the femoral artery to the heart, where it is placed inside the damaged valve. TAVR is less invasive than other procedures in this field. Typically, less invasive procedures like TAVR come with benefits including:
- Lower risk of infection
- Decreased recovery time
- Less trauma to the area where the procedure is performed
